MORPHE: Copper Spice and Bronzed Mocha Review

Hi Internet, it’s me.

It’s been quite a while but I’m back with another review on the palettes that Morphe Brushes recently released. I’ve been buying a little too much makeup lately and need to slow myself down but when I saw these… I couldn’t help myself. Come on, just look at these gorgeous neutral shades.

IMG_2587.JPGThese name of the palettes are Copper Spice and Bronzed Mocha and I do believe they’re limited edition so I’m not sure if they’re still available or not. This is such a bummer because they’re such good quality. What’s really cool about these palettes is that they’re mostly matte shades. You don’t always see mostly matte shades in mixed palettes.

I adore the matte shades because they have a lot of pigment and are easily bendable. Both of these palettes have so many neutral shades that you’re bound to find your perfect transition color. They can also give you a really good smokey eye. These pictures show me with a pretty natural eye shadow look which both of these can help you achieve.

dsc06354dsc06356The shimmery shades perform really well too but I think that you should be using a primer. Since they’re so creamy, there’s a specific way that I apply these shades to make sure that I’m getting the best color payoff. I have to press a little firmer and do one swipe rather than pat them on. It’s easily doable but it takes a few times to get the hang of it.

dsc06343My only real complaint about these palettes is that there are no highlighting shades. I love a good inner corner highlight and neither of these palettes have a a shade that I can work with. I did have to dip into a different palette, so that can be a little annoying but nothing too major.

dsc06330Overall, the quality of these shadows are really good, especially for the price that you pay for them. I just really wish that Morphe would have made these palettes permanent and created more of them that are the same formula with the same packaging. These palettes also get me really excited for the launch of the Jaclyn Hill x Morphe that was recently announced! So expect to read a review on that in the future. Hope you enjoyed and let me know if you have these palettes and what you think on my social media. 🙂

New Year, New Me… well, not really.

Hi Internet, it’s me.

It’s been a while since I posted but I felt the need to take a little break. Now I’m back and it’s the new year. 2016 was probably the worst year I’ve witnessed on a global scale but an alright year on personal one. I’ve done a lot this year and made some big changes.

The most significant thing about this year was that I went vegetarian and then later vegan. I started this blog and found a new passion for writing. I became more motivated to make a difference in the world. I reflected on my self as a person and took some major steps in order to live a healthier lifestyle. I’ve changed a lot this year and I’m thankful for that.

I turned 21 and started my last year of college. I made some new friends and got closer with my older friends. I traveled to Los Angeles (and randomly met David Beckham… like what?) and ate some really good food. I worked as a makeup artist and I’ve switched to cruelty-free makeup. I’ve done a lot this year and made some pretty cool memories.

Although, not all of it was positive. There definitely have been some not so great times this past year but I don’t like to dwell on the negative. I try to take bad things and learn from them. So this year, I’m taking the time to work on my self and become a stronger person.

I think it’s kind of silly to have these huge goals and call them “new year’s resolutions” because I think it’s important to constantly set goals for yourself and not just when January 1st rolls around. With that being said, I have goals I want to accomplish.

I want to start reading more books. I used to always read books but somehow with the internet, I kind of lost that love. I just finished reading Milk & Honey (doesn’t sound very vegan friendly, does it? ha!) by Rupi Kaur and it was wonderful. I want to write more, especially on here. I really found that I love writing for my own pleasure rather than mindless essays for class.

I want to cook more and make my own recipes, especially with Turkish cuisine. I want to exercise regularly again because after a minor injury last year, I kind of stopped and resent myself a little for that. I want to start focusing on my mental health and letting my emotions, that I tend to bury deep down, come to the surface. Whether that be through writing or talking about it, it’s something I need to work on.

Most importantly, I want to focus on being the best version of myself. I want to recognize my faults and weaknesses and work on them. I’m going to focus on learning, growing and accepting that change is good and to let it happen. I’ll still always be the same me, just the improved version.

So if you’re still reading this, keep your resolutions and accomplish them but don’t wait around for 2018 to set new goals. I hope 2017 brings you the best memories and may the negativity in 2016 stay in past. Here’s to 2017, you’re strong and you got what it takes to kick this year’s ass.

Stay beautiful,

Ayse💋

Song of the day: Just Hold On by Steve Aoki & Louis Tomlinson

Keep on keeping on.

Hi Internet, it’s me.

Since going vegan, I’ve received a lot of criticism from my family and friends. People always have something to say and it seems that only a few of them have positive comments. So I’m writing this now about how I deal with it and how I stay motivated for anyone struggling with something similar.

The thing that gets to me is I just don’t understand why people are so offended by my own personal choice. I’ve done my research and I know all of the benefits of a vegan diet. I know I’m saving the planet. I know I’m saving the lives of animals. I know I’m living a healthier lifestyle. It’s disheartening when people you care about just make fun of you because they don’t seem to understand.

Although, the thing that us vegans have to realize is that people are only being negative because they don’t know any better. They have the misconception that all vegans are trying to jump down your throat and force you to join them. That’s just not true. I believe it’s a personal choice but I’m more than willing to answer questions if someone’s curious.

So my best advice is to keep on keeping on because you’re doing the right thing. Don’t let negativity affect you and don’t be afraid to speak up and say how you feel either. You also shouldn’t waste your breath on explaining why you’re vegan to people who have nothing good to say. Focus on the supportive people and the ones who actually want to know. These are words that I heard from Victoria Moran, the author of Main Street Vegan, when she spoke at a vegan Thanksgiving potluck on my school’s campus.

Anyway, surround yourself with the right people and don’t ever doubt yourself. I also want to add that I posted a YouTube video about my story on why I went vegan and a lot of what I talked about above. So here it is if you want to check it out.

Don’t forget to check out all of my social video and I’ll see you soon with another post. 🙂

Roasted Sweet Potato Recipe

Hi Internet, it’s me.

When it comes to cooking, I’m probably the laziest person in the world. I practically live off of 90 second rice packs and microwaveable steamed vegetables because it takes five minutes. So it’s kind of a surprise that I actually decided to cook something in the first place but these were so easy to make!

I love sweet potatoes so much and they’re one of my favorite starchy vegetables. I was craving some fresh roasted ones so I decided to whip some up myself. I grabbed a few condiments, seasoned them and popped them in the oven.

All you need is:

  • Sweet potatoes
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Salt

You can add whatever spices you think will taste best but I wanted something simple and a little more savory. If you want it to be a little sweeter, you can use brown sugar (or regular or coconut sugar).

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset
Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

This will take you around 55 minutes to an hour to finish completely. Here are the steps that you’ll need to take:

  1. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees.
  2. Slice your sweet potatoes into bite size pieces. Make sure they’re not too big or too thin. This will make sure they are soft all the way through without getting burnt. Make sure you have a really sharp knife because sweet potatoes are HARD to slice si be careful!
  3. Then place them in a bowl and take about 3 tablespoons of olive oil and mix it up throughly with your hands until all sweet potatoes are coated.
  4. Next, you’ll add a sprinkle of your rosemary, thyme and salt. I didn’t measure it but I used a big pinch of each. Then you mix that all up again.
  5. Spray the pan that you’re going to use; mine was about 13×9. Then spread out your sweet potatoes across the pan evenly.
  6. Put them in the oven for about 40 minutes or until they’re golden brown.
  7. Take them out, let them cool down and EAT!

So there you have it, it’s a super simple recipe and they’re delicious. I like to have them with rice on the side with some salad but you can just eat these on their own for a little snack. Follow me on all of my social media and tag me if you decide to try this yourself! Enjoy!

Vegan in NYC: Cinnamon Snail and Red Bamboo

Hi Internet, it’s me.

Being a North Jersey native, going to Manhattan is something I do often. This past week, I went twice. Once was for the Troye Sivan concert at Terminal 5 and that other was to celebrate my friend’s 19th birthday (hi Aurpita if you’re reading this). This also means that I got to try two new vegan places and they were both didn’t dissappoint.

The first place I went to was Cinnamon Snail, which was a food truck the originated in Red Bank, New Jersey. They’re located at the Pennsy which is bar and food court type of location perfect for people going to see a show or game at Madison Square Garden. Anyway, they have a variety of different sandwiches, bowls and donuts.

I ordered the Beastmode Burger Deluxe which had BBQ sauce, jalapeno mac and cheese, smoked chili coconut bacon and chipotle mayo. It was maybe my favorite vegan burger I’ve had yet. It was a little spicy but I love spicy food so it definitely wasn’t a problem for me. I also got  raspberry cheesecake donut that was delicious.

The restaurant I went to later that week was a place called Red Bamboo. It’s a small restaurant located on W 4th St right by Washington Square Park. They offer a wide range of vegan comfort food that has Southern and Asian style cooking. Before going, I looked at the menu but I was so overwhelmed because every option sounded delicious.

One of my friends and I decided to get two appetizers and split them, so we ordered popcorn shrimp that came with sriacha mayo and barbecue buffalo wings that came with homemade ranch. The “shrimp” tasted exactly like regular shrimp that it was confusing and it was on point. The “wings” looked and tasted like chicken and they even put a wooden stick in it to resemble a bone. It was really good even though I personally didn’t like the stick because I’ve always preferred “boneless,” (ha!).

I was already pretty full but I got the soul “chicken” sandwich and added guacamole, daiya cheese and tempeh bacon to it. It tasted wonderful and it was probably the size of my face. I couldn’t finish it but DAMN was it tasty. I decided to take home a slice of peanut butter cup cheesecake because I really wanted to try their desserts but there was no was I was eating anymore at the restaurant. When I ate it later, my sweet tooth was more than satisfied. The chocolate on top of the cake was unreal and my tastebuds were singing. I can’t wait to go back and try something new.

But I will say that one of my friends ordered the spicy chicken and broccoli and she didn’t like it. I tasted it and something about the sauce or one of the spices they used for the chicken threw me off. I probably won’t get that for myself next time, but I was very content with my own order.

If you’re from New York City area, you HAVE to try these two places. They’re reasonably priced and offer the some of the best plant-based food I’ve tried. Although, after this week of constantly eating out… I think it’s time for me to take a break. My broke college kid pocket is crying a little.

Anyway, I hope you liked this little review. Don’t forget to check out my social media links on the side!

Review: Pacifica Kale Detox Cleanser

Hi Internet, it’s me.

Today, I wanted to talk about a new cleanser I’ve been testing out for the past few weeks. It’s from a brand called Pacifica, which is sold in Target, and they are a beauty brand that is 100% vegan and cruelty-free. I love seeing this in a drugstore that’s so easily accessible.

Anyway, I was in need of a new face wash when I was strolling through the aisles at Target and remembered that Pacifica was vegan. I saw their different face washes and since my skin is oily and acne-prone, I picked up the Kale Detox Deep Cleansing Face Wash. It comes in this green bottle claims to remove makeup, cleanse and tone. The ingredients in it include coconut water, clay and super greens.

Processed with VSCO with a6 presetI’ve been using this product for a few weeks now and I really like it. It’s a really gentle cleanser and it doesn’t break me out. It has a gel like consistency and it turns creamy once it’s in contact with water and your skin. I feel like it’s refreshing and it makes your skin feel clean without feeling super tight. I find that with a lot of cleansers meant for oily skin, my skin feels like it’s being pulled back and dried out. This cleanser doesn’t do that which is definitely a plus.

Although, if you’re looking for something deep clean and exfoliate your skin, this product isn’t that. It’s really good for everyday use. So it would be good to pair it with a deep exfoliator once in a while or even an exfoliating face mask.

So there’s my little review of Pacifica’s facial cleanser, which I will probably will be repurchasing. Make sure you follow my on all of my social media and leave a comment with product suggestions! Enjoy!

Eating Out: Veggie Heaven & Turning Point

Hi Internet, it’s me.

The last time I posted, it was pretty serious so today I wanted to come back and write about a few things that make me super happy. Breakfast and Vegan Chinese Food. Yes, you read that right. This past weekend I went to Veggie Heaven in Montclair NJ for the first time, after several friends were constantly telling me to go. Now I understand why. This food was SO good and I couldn’t believe it was vegan.

I ordered the chicken and broccoli with brown rice. I went with my dad and he ordered the beef and broccoli with white rice. I tried both and I will say that the “chicken” tasted more like chicken than the “beef” tasted beef. I also never liked beef as much anyway. The brown sauce tasted like normal take out Chinese that I used to order.

The day before I also went to Turning Point in Long Branch with is a breakfast & lunch type of restaurant that have a few locations near central and south New Jersey. It’s not all vegan but it was easy to order vegan options. I had some Avocado Toast (which I forgot to take a picture of so I’m annoyed at myself) and the Mediterranean Vegetarian Wrap but without Feta cheese. It was a whole wheat wrap loaded with baby spinach, roasted peppers, sliced artichoke hearts, roasted green zucchini, avocado slices and pesto spread.

It might seem like it’s impossible to order vegan while eating out but it really isn’t that hard! Depending on where you live, there probably is several different vegan restaurants in the area and you might not even know. Also, almost every restaurant has vegetarian options that can easily be turned vegan as well!

There you have it, keeping to a plant-based diet while eating out is not hard. If you’re in the New Jersey area, Veggie Heaven is must-try vegan place. Hope you enjoyed!

This is Not the End America

Hi Internet, it’s me.

I normally don’t write about politics or anything other than vegan food and makeup on here, but today is an exception. With a tear-stained face, I want to say that I’m fearful for the country that I live in. I am so heartbroken and in shock but I will never lose my faith in humanity. I believe that everyone has a heart that is capable of love even if tonight made me question that very belief.

Donald Trump officially became the 45th President of the United States. I am no longer able to say that I am proud to be an American. It shatters my heart and every fiber of my being that I’m saying this. The United States knows everything this racist, homophobic, misogynistic rapist has done and still chose to support him. The words that have come out of his mouth are vile and the ideas he talks about are painful to listen to. It’s so disheartening to see people agree with it all.

It’s sad to see people care more about money and guns than they care about the people who live in this country. We are all humans. We are all capable of love. We can rise above the hate. We have the power to make this country great, because I’m sorry Donald, it never really was. There was progress, but today it feels like we’ve taken steps backward.

My heart breaks for the minorities of this country. To all of my brothers and sisters, whether you’re black, hispanic, Muslim, LGBTQ+, female, a victim of sexual assault, I send all of my love to you and you are so important. To all of the people that voted for Trump, I am so incredibly angry with you but I send my love to you too. I’m sorry that you have all of this hate in your heart, and I wish I knew why you think the way you do.

This election doesn’t have to be the end. I refuse to let bigotry be the future of America. We have fought too hard to let our country be fueled by hate. I might be broken right now, and you might be too, but this isn’t the end and love will always trump hate. I want to remind everyone that we shouldn’t only unite as Americans but as people. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what country you’re from because are all humans. We can nurture our souls with love and compassion.

So if you’re reading this and you’re scared like me, love unconditionally, love compassionately, love freely and love MORE.

Stay beautiful strong,

Ayse💋

“Where do you get your protein?” COOKIES!

Hi Internet, it’s me.

When you first tell someone you’re vegan, chances are you’ll hear the question “but… where do you get your protein?” and then you have to refrain from rolling your eyes. Anyway, if you asked me this question recently, my answer would be: cookies! Yes, you read that right. Cookies. My friend told me about these awesome protein cookies by a brand called Lenny and Larry’s and how they were vegan and I knew I had to try them.

They’re called The Complete Cookie andI found them in my local 7/11 store and decided to grab a few different flavors. So far, I’ve tried the Snickerdoodle, Double Chocolate and Chocolate Chip. My favorite was Snickerdoodle but the Double Chocolate was a close second. They taste so delicious and they have 16 grams of protein! That’s insane, and they also have 8 grams of fiber. They’re free from high fructose corn syrup, sugar alcohols, artificial flavors, cholesterol, and trans fats. So basically: they taste good and they’re relatively good for you.

If you check on their website, they have many more flavor options including birthday cake, peanut butter, white chocolate macadamia, pumpkin spice and a few others. I’ve been really loving these and can’t wait to try more. So if you’re eating a plant-based diet or you just want to eat a healthy protein cookie, these cookies receive a 10/10 recommendation from me.

Happy Halloween! Halloweekend 2016

Hi Internet, it’s me.

Happy Halloween! I’m writing this as I’m all snuggled up in bed because this weekend took everything out of me. Getting all dressed up and going out 3 nights in a row will probably do that to you. So this year, I’m staying in on Halloween because my Halloweekend was crazy enough. If you don’t follow me on instagram and haven’t seen these yet, here’s some of the looks that I came up with:

Round one was king of simple really… pretty much what I look like everyday. Ha! Just kidding, I don’t wear contour on an everyday basis. Okay but in all seriousness, I always wanted to do a gunshot wound and look really dead for halloween, so this happened.

Night two was KISS and it was probably my favorite. I loved looking like a rock star and glamming up the classic rocker look. I also was inspired mostly my Little Mix’s Leigh Anne Pinnock when they did their KISS costume.

And lastly, I decided to do my take on a sugar skull. Normally, I see a lot of different colors incorporated into sugar skulls but I wanted to look extra shiny and shimmery. So I went in with my gold and copper toned eye shadows and went to town.

So there you have it! This was what I looked like for my crazy hectic Halloweekend and I can’t wait for next year. Enjoy!

Stay beautiful,

Ayse💋

Udder Chaos: Vegan Food Truck @ MU

Hi Internet, it’s me.

Last week I almost screamed when I saw the Student Activities Board at my school, Monmouth University, announced they were having an event with FREE vegan food. I was so pumped to go because being a college student, sometimes I run low on cash and never want to spend any on food.

The food truck offered 3 different sandwich options and 3 smoothie options and you got to choose one to have for free! Sandwiches were the vegan burger, falafel wrap and grilled portobello. The smoothies were classic (strawberry & banana), greegan (green smoothie) and the #Harambe (chocolate banana & peanut butter).

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset All you had to do was pledge to end animal cruelty and you got a ticket to get one item off the menu. I just couldn’t resist and bought a second one too. I got the falafel wrap and the #Harambe smoothie (banana, cocoa, and peanut butter). The wrap was so good and I’m someone who is super picky when it comes to falafel. It’s the Middle Eastern in me, what can I say?

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

Next to the truck, there were tables  set up with facts on animal cruelty and pamphlets on how to live a vegan lifestyle. It was really informative. I could definitely see it helping people who still don’t understand it or people who don’t agree with it. There’s so many misconceptions about the vegan lifestyle and this was the perfect way to show people what it’s all about. It’s also a perfect event to have on a college campus. So shoutout to Brenna (the awareness chair for SAB who I met today) for setting this whole thing up and sharing the love for animals!

First Impression: Carli Bybel Palette

Hi Internet, it’s me.

This past weekend, a package I was anxiously awaiting for finally arrived: the BH Cosmetics Carli Bybel Palette. I’ve been eyeing this palette for a while but I didn’t know if I should go through with purchasing it because I have a serious spending problem when it comes to eye shadow palettes and highlighters. I justified the purchase by looking at the price tag… it was only $14.50! That’s practically a steal when you see what’s inside.

The palette has 10 eyeshadows and 4 highlighters but realistically, you can use the highlighters as eyeshadows and vice versa. All of the colors are neutral and mostly warm toned. It’s perfect for beginners that don’t want to take too many risks with bright colors. It’s also ideal for traveling because it has all of your basic shades that can help you create a variety of looks. I will say that if you already have a lot of neutral palettes, you might not need this palette but if you’re a junkie like me… you NEED this palette. The highlighter shades are also a huge bonus because they come with a variety of different shades. No matter what skin tone you are, there’s an color option that can help you achieve that glow.

carli-bybel
Source: http://www.thebeautybybel.com

Quality wise, these shades are so pigmented. It’s hard to believe the color payoff is that good with a price that low. The shimmery and matte shades are both evenly pigmented and haven’t showed any patches. I applied them for the first time today and noticed that they blend very smoothly. The matte shades impressed me the most because I know that it’s hard to find creamy matte eyeshadows for an affordable price. So far, all of these colors have passed the test for me.

Another thing I love about this palette is I know that it comes from a company that is completely cruelty-free and a blogger that has recently transitioned into the vegan lifestyle. The brands website even has a page with all of their vegan products so it makes it super easy to shop! Carli has also talked about going vegan on her YouTube channel and it’s so cool to see, especially since she has such a big following. Fun fact: when she first posted about going vegan, I was going through my transition as well and it gave me an even bigger push to change my lifestyle… and here I am today.

Anyways, hope this first impression review was helpful if you were thinking about buying this palette. Enjoy!

Stay beautiful,

Ayse💋
